The people of Mauritius are VERY friendly. It’s a really safe country to travel to and they are very grateful to have tourists, especially since their country took such a hit during COVID.
For most people in Mauritius, English is their 3rd language. Native language is Creole and their second language is French (Lots of French people vacation in Mauritius). We were the only people at our resort where English was our first language. We didn’t have any major issues but something to be mindful of when traveling to Mauritius.
We typically prefer more quaint stays but decided to stay at a larger 5-star hotel in Mauritius. We stayed at one of the Beachcomber hotels. Beachcombers has 8 resorts on the island. They were very helpful in answering all my questions when I specified I was looking for the “most romantic” hotel option. They also gave a discount for it being our honeymoon. We really liked where we stayed (the southwest part of the island), but one of our taxi drivers highly recommended the North / Northeast part of the island. We never made it up to that part of the island but would like to point out that local recommendation.

Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean with crystal clear water. It’s located near Seychelles and the Maldives. The big, fancy resorts are more costly but the island itself isn’t very expensive.
Mauritius has amazing waterfalls and hikes. We, unfortunately, did not explore the popular hikes, as we were informed most waterfalls were dried up when we were there due to their dry season. (We were their end of October and, the beginning of November). If seeing their fabulous waterfalls and pools of water is a top priority when you travel to Mauritius, I highly recommend paying attention to the wet and dry seasons when planning your trip. Here is some information about the weather in Mauritius:
Summer: November-April: Rainy season (February the wettest month) // Average temp: 86F
Autumn: May: Less rainfall, shoulder season // Average Temp 81F
Winter: June - September: Dry breeziest season // Average Temp 77F
Spring: October: Driest month, shoulder season // Average Temp 78F
Top Activities in Mauritius:
Snorkeling - anywhere on the island is beautiful
Scuba diving - approximately 50 dive sites around the island
Sailing - can charter a sailboat or sail yourself for free through the beachcombers resort
Swimming with the dolphins or boat ride for dolphin viewing
Helicopter tour over an underwater waterfall - one of the more popular things to see in Mauritius
Chamarel Waterfall
Pamplemousses Botanical Garden
Seven Colored Earth: (small area of sand dunes comprised of 7 different colors)
Black River Gorges National Park - plenty of hikes here to explore and can also rent e-bikes to explore
Explore the central market in Port Luis and even do a rum-tasting
Sit on the beach, and enjoy the breathtaking views while relaxing with a rum cocktail in hand
